SRI LANKA: END OF LTTE?

Sri Lanka may finally crush LTTE, but India has lost out a valuable opportunity to extend its influence

The initiative by Japan, an influential member of the Sri Lankan donor club is the first of its kind since January 2008, when Sri Lanka abrogated the 2002 cease fire brokered by Norwegians. Since then, Colombo has vowed to finish off the Tamil rebels once and for all.

According to diplomatic sources, Colombo’s acceptance of Akashi as a negotiator just proved that Japan has agreed to play a larger role as a neutral party in the conflict. It also means that India''s role as a negotiator and mediator has significantly whittled down since Indira Gandhi''s time. Even during the IPKF years, Tamil Nadu chief ministers, aware of the sensitivities involved, opposed India’s armed intervention in the island. With such opposition coming from within the Indian union, it became politically and diplomatically untenable for New Delhi to continue with IPKF operations. Things have clearly not changed much since then.

Unable to intervene – coupled with India’s capabilities to assist militarily on the decline - the field has been left open for countries like China and Pakistan to offer defence assistants and pacts. That is something that India could scarcely be too happy about.
